Glaucoma
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a progressive degeneration of the optic nerve and is usually the result of raised eye pressure. The most common type of glaucoma is termed ‘primary’ as there is no specific cause. There are also secondary causes of glaucoma including angle closure, trauma, and cataracts, as well as other eye conditions.
What are the symptoms of glaucoma?
The main challenge of glaucoma is that there are often no symptoms early in the disease process. The peripheral vision is first affected, and it may not be until the disease has advanced that vision loss is noticed. Glaucoma can lead to blindness if left untreated, but early diagnosis and treatment can often help to preserve vision.
Occasionally patients may notice non-specific symptoms such as headaches, tiredness of the eyes, haloes around lights at night, and patchy vision. If any of these symptoms are experienced, please get in touch with our team for a consultation.

Treatment for glaucoma
Overall, there are a variety of different treatment options for glaucoma, and the most appropriate option will depend on the specific case. In general, the goal of treatment is to lower eye pressure to prevent or reduce damage to the optic nerve. Lead ophthalmologist at EyeHub, Dr Sonia Moorthy uses Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), a laser procedure, as first-line treatment.
A combination of laser and surgery may be necessary in some cases. Should management need to be scaled up, the surgical option includes MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery), an established surgical technique with excellent results.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Answers to your questions about glaucoma treatment
Will my vision be restored after treatment?
The optic nerve is responsible for sending visual information from the eye to the brain. Once damage to the optic nerve occurs, it is permanent and vision loss is irreversible. Glaucoma is a condition that damages the optic nerve, often causing blindness.
Though there is no cure for glaucoma, there are treatments available that can help to prevent further damage to the optic nerve and slow the progression of vision loss.
It is important for people at risk of glaucoma to be monitored and treated by an eye specialist in order to prevent vision loss.
What are the options for treatment of glaucoma?
There are many options for glaucoma treatment, and your ophthalmologist will recommend the best one for your condition. At EyeHub, this includes laser procedures such as selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), laser peripheral iridotomy (PI), and many more.

What is Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)?
Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery is a newer approach to glaucoma treatment that uses micro-stents to lower intraocular pressure (IOP).
One benefit of MIGS is that it poses a lower risk of potential surgical complications than traditional glaucoma surgeries. MIGS can also be performed in combination with cataract surgery.
