Combining Human Expertise, Neuro-Adaptation and Artificial Intelligence in Ophthalmology
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming healthcare worldwide, and ophthalmology is no exception. As patient demand grows and expectations for faster, more accessible care rise, eye clinics are increasingly adopting advanced technologies to enhance the patient experience while upholding the highest standards of clinical care.
At EyeHub, innovation has always focused on improving patient outcomes, not on replacing the human touch. This year, we are introducing two significant initiatives to support patients before, during and after their vision-correction journey.
Supporting Patients Through Neuro-Adaptation
The first is our Neuro-Adaptation Training Program, designed for patients considering or undergoing PRESBYOND and Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE).
While most discussions about vision correction focus on the eyes, an often-overlooked factor is the brain’s role in adapting to a new visual system.
After procedures such as PRESBYOND and RLE, patients often experience a period of adjustment as the brain learns to process vision differently. EyeHub is among the first ophthalmology practices in Australia to formally incorporate structured neuro-adaptation training into patient care.
Available both before and after surgery, the program helps prepare patients for their new visual experience and supports a smoother adaptation process following treatment.
By introducing patients to visual exercises and adaptation strategies before surgery and providing ongoing support afterwards, we aim to improve confidence, reduce uncertainty and help patients maximise the benefits of their procedure.
Meet Amelia, EyeHub’s Virtual Vision Assistant
The second initiative is Amelia, EyeHub’s new Virtual Vision Assistant.
Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Amelia has been designed specifically for ophthalmology practices and is trained on more than 24 years of patient interaction data collected from over 1,000 eye care practices.
This gives her a depth of ophthalmic knowledge far beyond many generic AI systems that rely solely on information manually uploaded by individual businesses.
Amelia can answer questions about:
- Cataract surgery
- Laser vision correction procedures
- Appointments
- Referrals
- Costs
- Patient pathways
She can also book and reschedule appointments, take messages and transfer callers directly to our team whenever required.
Supporting Our Team, Not Replacing It
Importantly, Amelia is not designed to replace people. She is designed to support them.
By handling routine enquiries and administrative tasks, Amelia frees our staff to spend more time assisting patients who need personalised care and support.
Patients benefit from immediate access to information without waiting on hold, while our team gains more time to focus on delivering an exceptional clinical experience.
Across Australia and internationally, AI-powered agents are becoming an increasingly important part of healthcare delivery. They help practices improve responsiveness, reduce administrative workloads, extend service availability beyond traditional business hours and provide patients with faster access to information when they need it most.
Technology That Enhances Human Care
At EyeHub, we believe technology should enhance human care, not replace it.
Whether through neuro-adaptation training that helps patients adjust to life after surgery or AI-powered assistance that makes care easier to access, our focus remains the same: delivering a better experience and better outcomes for every patient who entrusts us with their vision.
